Excellence in REDD and REDD+ - Camco’s work in supporting rural development in Africa and combating climate change

Deforestation and other forms of land use change or degradation are responsible for approximately 17% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, more than the entire world’s transport sector, making land cover change the second largest contributor to global warming. Forests therefore play a pivotal role in any initiative to combat climate change.
Camco’s Capabilities in REDD and REDD+
Camco is committed to working with partners and stakeholders to realise sustainable energy and livelihood solutions from forests, agricultural lands and other natural resources. Camco is a leading centre of expertise in the quantification of carbon benefits from forestry and land use project activities. Camco has over 15 years’ experience in supporting projects and policies aimed at using carbon finance or carbon related incentives to promote sustainable forestry and land use.Advancing REDD+ in the Kolo Hills Forest is an example of such a project, currently underway in the Kondoa District in Tanzania. The project has been developed by the Africa Wildlife Foundation (AWF) with technical assistance provided by Camco. This is one of the pilot projects that is designed to link sustainable forest management and carbon financing through REDD+. The sale of carbon credits will provide a sustainable source of financial support for the project whilst also helping Tanzania to meet its obligations of managing forests and woodlands in a sustainable manner and at the same time respond to conservation and poverty reduction initiatives. For over a decade, Camco has been working with NGOs, academic institutions and international organisations to develop community-based forest management projects using carbon finance. Camco was instrumental in developing the Plan Vivo Standard, one of the highest standards in the market for voluntary forestry projects that provides small-scale farmers in rural communities with an upfront carbon payment to establish plantations and sustainable land use. Since then Camco has helped organisations and communities develop carbon credits by use of Plan Vivo standard and other standards such as CCB, VCS, and REDD. All our REDD projects include community capacity building. For additional background on REDD+ please click here.To find out more about REDD in Africa please follow this link.
